Mervyn
Burtch is one of Wales' most distinguished composers. He is a fellow of the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, and the recipient of an MBE for his contribution to
music in Wales. His prolific output covers all genres including music for orchestra,
piano, voice, choir, brass bands, chamber music, string quartets, opera and commissioned
work for amateur performers.
In 1984 after teaching in schools for many years, he joined the staff at Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Cardiff and become head of the performance course.
In this role he set up the Schools' Opera programme for which he wrote a dozen operas. In 1997 he set up 'KidsOp' with librettist Mark Morris to write and perform operas that would involve children alongside adult performers, and this led to seven full-scale operas which have been performed in Wales, Canada, Mexico, Germany and South Africa.
His music has been widely published, broadcast and performed in the UK, Australia, Canada, The Czech Republic, Eire, Hungary, New Zealand, Portugal, Italy and Colombia.
Throughout his career, Mervyn Burtch has sought out projects that engage new audiences, particularly the young, and those that encourage participation in music making.
